Retrofit design of a Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) for the bulk carrier M/V MAR, IMO number 9586447, deadweight tonnage (DWT) 7,975 tons, built in 2011. Project conducted between 17.02.2016 and 29.03.2016.


The project was prepared within the period of 6 weeks in accordance with the agreed agenda, and included the following procedures:

  • an onboard survey (with 3D scanning),
  • BWMS layout processing,
  • preparation of workshop drawings (for hull modification, for the modification of existing piping, for new system piping and layout),
  • preparation of material lists (of piping components, structural elements, electric components),
  • preparation of manuals and other documents requested by the Classification Society.

Certain specificities characteristic for retrofit projects had to be taken into consideration:

spatial limitations onboard, the arrangement of equipment and piping in relation to existing walkways, corrections to the existing “as-built” documentation, etc.


As the project concentrated on a relatively new technological solution (BWMS) implemented onboard a vessel with preexisting structures, specialists at Nava once again had a chance to prove how highly flexible and competent they are in a variety of fields. Out-of-the-box thinking and strong motivation were crucial in this, and in many other projects in which the execution of inimitable or technically demanding solutions were needed.
